Lung volumes in giraffes, Giraffa camelopardalis.
We have measured lung mass and trachea dimensions in 46 giraffes of both genders ranging in body mass from 147 kg to 1441 kg, calculated static and dynamic lung volumes, and developed allometric equations that relate changes in them to growth. We found that relative lung mass is 0.6±0.2% of body mass which is significantly less than it is in other mammals (1.1±0.1%). Total lung volume is signif...

متن کاملThe Cervical Osteology of Okapia johnstoni and Giraffa camelopardalis
Giraffidae is the only family of ruminants that is represented by two extant species; Okapia johnstoni and Giraffa camelopardalis. Of these taxa, O. johnstoni represents a typical short-necked ungulate, and G. camelopardalis exemplifies the most extreme cervical elongation seen in any ruminant. We utilize these two species to provide a comprehensive anatomic description of the cervical vertebra...
متن کاملO Conceito de Operação Estabelecedora na Análise do Comportamento
In general terms, establishing operations can be defined as environmental events that alter the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, as well as evoke all behavior that, in the past, has been followed by such a stimulus. The concept seems to describe, in behavioral terms, what is usually called motivation. The present paper is an attempt to didactically present the theoretical development of...
متن کاملOn the origin, evolution and phylogeny of giraffes Giraffa camelopardalis
One of the more enduring folklore tales about modern giraffes is that they defy Darwinian “long continued” gradualistic evolution, appearing in the African Pleistocene as if they had no ancestors, having been created by an act of God as a monument to biological structural engineering. In Lankester’s (1908) words, “It is altogether exceptional, novel, and specialised”. Thus Hitching (1982) could...
